Harder to gauge in the memoir, or for the writer herself, or for Black people in general, is to what degree are these bad things that happen to her/us truly bad? Is my experience sufficiently terrible to share with the world? Is my “harrowing” experience worthy of note? Books are written on niche subjects all the time and James, a talented writer, does a good job of making the story relatable to anyone who has ever been or will ever be a teenager. By James’s own admission, and according to a decently large part of the book’s premise, this is a small group of people. On the strength of that piece and its popularity, The Toast mentioned that they would like to see a full-length work.Īnd yet reading Admissions one question continually came to mind: who is this for? The audience that can truly relate to this story, or so it would seem, is a niche one: minorities at elite boarding schools. According to the “Acknowledgements” section of Admissions, Kendra James was asked to pen her memoir after her listicle about being a Black girl at a New England boarding school went viral. ![]()
